Competitions

Since 1997, ACBA has been organising tournaments focused on promoting the game of basketball amongst the Chinese community in Sydney. This goal is achieved through the implementation of a rule which restricts the number of non-Asian players allowed on the court at any one time during the game.

Over the years, ACBA has been proud to bring Sydney and Australia the following tournaments:

Hong Kong Dim Sim Cup

This tournament started in 1998 with the support of Mr Kok Ching Ho, Director of the Hong Kong Dim Sim Kitchen Group. The first tournament was held at Five Dock Leisure Centre, however, the growth in the number of teams meant that the tournament is now hosted at Auburn Basketball Stadium.

Challenge Cup

Commencing in 2009, the Challenge Cup is our “Summer” competition and came about due to the demand from our members for tournaments all year round. The Challenge Cup is the last tournament on the annual calendar and is focused the social aspect of the ACBA family rather than competition. There is no Premier League in this tournament as many of the players are preparing to go on tour as members of the Dragons and Tigers team.

HealthPac Cup

The HeathPac Cup is sponsored by Health Pac International which owns and operates medical centres located in Sydney, Hurstville and Chatswood. The tournament is now the first of the year and acts as a warm up to the premier Hong Kong Dim Sim Cup competition.

Global Mortgages Cup

The first Global Mortgages Cup was held over eleven weeks from April to July 2002 at Five Dock Leisure Centre.

While the first tournament was highly successful, the busy sporting calendar has meant that this tournament will now be combined with the CASF Games at Easter in 2003. After an absence of two years, the tournament returned in 2006 and will now be played annually from February to June.

Emperors Garden Cup

This tournament was first held in 1997 with the support of Mr Stanley Yee, the Director of the Emperor's Garden Group, who has been a very generous sponsor of this competition, who has also pledged to continue to sponsor the tournament for an indefinite period.

Chinese Australian Sports Federation

ACBA has been a co-organiser of the Easter Long Weekend basketball competition since 1997. This basketball tournament is part of an Easter Sports Carnival that also includes the soccer, tennis, table tennis and badminton. Each year, the Carnival attracts between 800 and 1000 participants.

333 Premium Export Beer 3-on-3

3-on-3 “street” style basketball is the most widely played version of the game in the world, with origins from the streets of the USA. This 3-on-3 “street” style basketball tournament made its debut with ACBA on the 7th November, 1999. The event was made possible by the support of Mr Tony Tu, Director of Tus Holdings Pty Ltd, importers of 333 Premium Export Beer from Vietnam, is the sponsor of this event.

Philips Summer Asian League

Developed by Trisco Lee and David Bedford, the Philips Summer Asian League was hosted at Auburn Basketball Centre as a pre-season warm-up for the top teams in the ACBA tournaments during the summers of 2005 and 2006. Played over 8 weeks, the tournament provided box scores and statistical leaders for the all participants.
